Since 1946, in order to provide a trading platform for wholesale fishes business to fishermen and buyers, Fish Marketing Organization (FMO) had set up a “fish collection station”(fish station) in Sai Kung. Owning to rapid development of fisheries, FMO upgraded Sai Kung fish station to Sai Kung Wholesale Fish Market (SKFM, wooden structure as shown below) in 1969.
To provide a comfortable and safe environment to market users, FMO decided to refurbish the structure in Dec 2008. The new Sai Kung Fish Market re-opened in March 2009.SKFM has 380 square meters and it is located at “18-20 Sai Pong Street, Sai Kung”. The fish species provided in SKFM usually are Snapper, Threadfin Bream, Ponyfish, Grey Mullet.
In line with community development of Sai Kung District, FMO operate a “Fishermen Weekend Bazaar” on Sunday from June-2015. Every Sunday from 11AM to 5PM, there are show boards of fishery industry to introduce the public about the background and operation of FMO. In addition, FMO invites local fishermen's groups and non-profit-making organizations to sell local dried fisheries products and handmade gifts. FMO also provide individual quick frozen accredited fish for purchase. Besides, there are also mini exhibition truck and computer games to introduce the fishing practices in Hong Kong, the information of Accredited Fish Farm Scheme by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the knowledge of local fisheries & local aquaculture.
